OzHarvest has welcomed Dr Gordon Reid MP during one of its weekly food rescue operations, collecting surplus food from supermarkets across the Central Coast, to deliver to charity agencies.

Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP says he found the opportunity to support OzHarvest insightful and wants to raise community awareness of food waste in the region.

“OzHarvest is an outstanding organisation that rescues surplus food from supermarkets and delivers to amazing charities like Green Point Community Centre and Mary Mac’s Place Woy Woy”, Said Dr Reid.

“This rescued food enables charity agencies to prepare and feed vulnerable people in the region”, Dr Reid said.

“It was an eye-opening experience to see the level of surplus food that would otherwise go to waste, if not for the tireless efforts of OzHarvest, salvaging this food”, Dr Reid said.

“It was great to visit a number of supermarkets across the Coast in the iconic yellow OzHarvest food rescue truck and I look forward to more opportunities to support OzHarvest in the future”, Said Dr Reid.

OzHarvest was founded in 2004 and has delivered over 30 million meals including almost 23 million meals from food rescued from landfill. OzHarvest has teamed up with 1,900 charity agencies across the country.

On the Central Coast last financial year, OzHarvest managed to rescue over 48,000 kilos of surplus food and delivered the equivalent of over 147,000 meals to charities who used it to feed people.

“Australia produces 7.6 million tonnes of food waste every year, valued at $37 billion. This is a large figure and an issue we must tackle as a community”, Said Dr Reid.

“For many, the cost of living is making more people food insecure, Ozharvest and charities like Mary Mac’s Place, ensure those in these circumstances can still access nutritious meals”, Dr Reid said.

“I would like to thank OzHarvest, its employees and volunteers for their commitment to addressing food waste, and supporting those in need, in the Central Coast and across Australia”, Dr Reid said.
