FEDERAL FUNDING FOR NATIONALLY CONSISTENT NEWBORN SCREENING PROGRAM

14 July 2023

The Federal Government is providing $39 million to achieve a nationally consistent newborn screening program.

Previously, there was no clear pathway for screening between states. It had taken anywhere from 5 to 14 years for new conditions to be included for screening and there was no guarantee that what was screened in one state would also be screened in other states.

For the first time in 60 years, there is now an agreed national list of current newborn bloodspot screening conditions, specific funding to achieve consistency across Australia, and a streamlined pathway to consider more conditions for screening.

Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP, welcomes the Federal Government’s funding announcement and said this funding will ensure we identify diseases early on.

“I welcome the funding announcement by the Albanese Labor Government and congratulate the Health Minister on delivering on this commitment”, Dr Reid said.

“It is so important that there is consistency across States and Territories when it comes to newborn screening for diseases and other medical conditions”.

“When we can identify a disease early on, health professionals can formulate the most appropriate course of care”, Dr Reid said.

“It also means other medical conditions can be treated early on and referred to relevant specialist care”.

“As an emergency doctor, practising in the region’s hospitals, this funding will enhance healthcare and ensure greater wraparound care for our newborn babies and their families”, Dr Reid said.
