A community petition calling on Central Coast Council to provide a safety fence and shade at the new Kariong Playspace, on Curringa Road, has been launched.

Following the completion of the playspace, residents in Kariong have been hesitant to let their children play on the equipment because there is no fence or shade.

The Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP, has created a petition and is lobbying Council for these safety provisions.

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP:

“Residents have told me that cars travelling along Curringa Road regularly exceed the speed limit.

“The playspace is only a few metres away from this busy road and parents are concerned that the conditions are too dangerous for children to play on the equipment.

“On top of this, there is no adequate shade which leaves children and parents at risk of skin cancer.

“I am launching this petition to call on Central Coast Council to address these safety issues”, Dr Reid said.

Quotes attributable to local Kariong mum, Stefanie Moebus:

“The recently opened playground in Kariong provides a modern play space and is a wonderful addition to the local community but the missing shade and fence is a real concern for our community.

“In summer, the sun heats up the play equipment very rapidly and without shade clothes or more trees, kids can end up with serious burns from hot equipment. On top of that, skin cancer is the most common cancer in Australia and children are particularly at risk.

“While we are all taught the importance of slip, slop, slap, it’s also important to seek out shade and have shade structures at playgrounds.

“The road is also too close to the playground to leave it unfenced. Especially if you have more than one child in your care, it’s almost impossible to watch all their movements for every second that you are out.

“Never underestimate the speed of a determined toddler with no road sense. As a local parent with two young kids, I would love to see a safe outdoor play space for our family to enjoy”, Ms Moebus said.
