Students, teachers, and parents at Yattalunga Valley Christian School (YVCS) have been unable to maximise outdoor learning spaces due to lack of shade.

Often students cannot use the outdoor learning spaces because of sun safety precautions.

The Federal Government has announced that YVCS will receive funding from the Schools Upgrade Fund.

The school will receive $25,000 to purchase new shade structures that will ensure greater functionality of its outdoor learning spaces.

Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP, visited YVCS to see firsthand how this funding will benefit the school.

“I am pleased to announce that YVCS will receive much-needed funding to purchase shade structures for its outdoor learning spaces”, Dr Reid said.

“It is important students are able to take their learning from the classroom to the outdoors, and this funding will ensure the school can do this”.

“These shade structures will ensure students have greater protection from the sun and will be able to maximise the school’s outdoor learning spaces for education and recreation”, Dr Reid said.

“It is a great joy to be able to support the learning of our young people on the Central Coast”.

YVCS Principal, Nicole Smith, said the school will be able to purchase four new shade structures.

“For many students, physically moving and hands on activities provide greater engagement in learning. At YVCS our students use the outdoor environment to play and to learn”, Ms Smith said.

“The grant provided by Dr Gordon Reid will enable YVCS to purchase and install 4 shade structures that will not only protect our students from the sun, but also from the glare reflecting up from the concrete”.

“This space is used every day as our students conduct science experiments, participate in PE lessons and ride scooters across the concrete. Having shade here will enable greater functionality and use of this wonderful area for our students. We are very thankful”, Ms Smith said.
