Local dad, firefighter and now author Nathan Spare, has released a wonderful new book entitled, ‘When the Station Bells Ring’.

Nathan is a Saratoga local, and a Firefighter with Fire + Rescue NSW, and has turned his many years of experience into a story that provides a very honest depiction of life as a firefighter. He describes it as, ‘a partially gross but completely epic firefighting story ‘never’ before illustrated and shared’.

Along with raising awareness of the many complexities facing our front-line workers, Nathan will donate fifty percent of the book’s profits to the ‘Who Gives a Crap Foundation’ to help support access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene projects in developing countries.

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP:

It was wonderful to meet Nathan and his son and hear about the inspiration behind the story.

“Our Firefighters respond to a range of challenging callouts every day, and this book helps us understand the job they do in a highly entertaining and relatable way”.

“Congratulations to Nathan on his first picture book”.

Quotes attributable to the author, Nathan Spare:

“The idea for the story of what happens when the bells ring and a Firefighter is in the middle of going to the toilet came from the idea to 'humanise' firefighters.

“We tend to exist in the community’s mindset in a place between being heroes and being viewed as lazy Firie's that hang out in coffee shops, check the surf and sleep on the job. And we do, but when we are it means people are having a good day.

“When you see a firefighter working, someone may be having the worst day of their lives and that firefighter may have been mid lunch, mid study, mid work out or shower and even mid toilet.

“We have ordered a pizza and returned from a call after the shop has closed, we have prepared station 'cook ups and had to leave mid preparation, returning to discuss whether half cooked chicken can be saved.

“We have been up all night and come home to our families, staying awake long enough to get the kids off to school.

“The message I have been writing in the kids book I sign, is "Always have a laugh no matter what job you do" And that's what I have tried to share with this book.
